Background The traditional Chinese medicine fulfilled a crucial function on recovery of patients with thyroid cancer after operation. The study is to explore the effect of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine on thyroid function, immune function and prognosis of patients with thyroid cancer after operation. Methods 80 patients with thyroid cancer were divided into observation group (n=40) and control group (n=40) according to random number table method. The patients in control group were treated with levothyroxine sodium, while the patients in observation group were treated with traditional Chinese medicine decoction on the basis of the treatment of control group. The clinical efficacy, maximum thyroid nodule diameter, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), cytokines CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD4+/CD8+, β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor specific growth factor (TSGF), leukocyte differentiation antigen 44 variant 6 (CD44V6) and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, the maximum diameter of thyroid nodules, the levels of TSH, CD8+, β2-MG, IL-6, TSGF and CD44V6 in observation group was significantly lower than that in control group, and the levels of CD3+, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ in observation group were higher than those in control group. Compared with control group, the incidence of adverse reactions was decreased in observation group. Conclusion The combined treatment of traditional Chinese and Western medicine can effectively improve the thyroid function of patients with thyroid cancer after operation, enhance the immune function of patients and benefit the prognosis of patients.
